My fascination with these massive armed conflicts broadened when I discovered the American Civil War, an event a full century previous but still very much burned into U.S. As I mentioned in my starting post about it here, I read the Penguin classics version that also included a version of The Art of War with some commentary included with the main body of the text. I've been making my way back to classical texts lately, and The Art of War has been on my list to read for a while now. Apart from being broadcast on Belgian television, the interview has been shown several times to the mainly student audience of the association, but the text has never been published. A classical text does not stand alone. Capturing the literary quality of the work, Minford presents the core text in two formats: first, the unadorned ancient words of wisdom ascribed to Sun-tzu; then, the same text with extensive running commentary from the canon of traditional Chinese Chapter 13: Espionage. Pi I-hsun, the author of the SUN TZU HSU LU, backs this up with a quotation from the WU YUEH CH`UN CH`IU: "The King of Wu summoned Sun Tzu, and asked him questions about the art of war.
